Tartanes were widely used across the Mediterranean - from Turkey to Spain - for a variety of tasks. They were especially favored by Algerian corsairs. Upon reaching the Archipelago, the tartane became popular with local pirates, particularly after Tortuga craftsmen fitted it with mortars.
