This ship was funded by the people of Cantabria ("the mountain" region of Spain, hence the name Montañés - "the Highlander"). It became the benchmark for later Spanish 74-gun ships of the line of the late 18th century. It took part in almost every major naval engagement from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
